Curriculum vitae

Prof. Francesco Montorsi was born on November 5, 1962 in Milan.  In 1987 he graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, with the thesis: “Effect of cyclosporine on pancreatic cellular beta functionality”, subsequently published in the American Journal of Surgery. In July 1992 he obtained the Specialization in Urology with the highest marks and honors at the University of Milan, with the thesis: “Eco-color doppler and penile hemodynamics”. In November 2001 he obtained with the highest marks and honors the Specialization in Endocrinology, Andrology at the University of Pisa, discussing the thesis “Erectile dysfunction following radical prostatectomy”.

Surgery

The rich operating experience of Prof. Francesco Montorsi, demonstrated  by his publications on various topics of urology and surgical andrology, was acquired under the constant guidance of Prof. Patrizio Rigatti starting from 1987, as part of the activity of the Urology Department of San Raffaele Hospital. To refine his surgical knowledge, Prof. Francesco Montorsi attended the ward and operating room activities of the most important urological departments worldwide. To date he has performed more than 10,000 medium- and high-complexity surgery interventions in all fields of urology and andrology as first operator. 

Research and scientific publications

After graduation, the scientific activity of Prof. Francesco Montorsi focused on the urological and andrological field and in particular on the study of prostate, bladder and kidney tumors, prostate hypertrophy, male sexual dysfunctions and stone calculus therapy. urinary. More recently, the scientific research of Prof. Francesco Montorsi has addressed the field of laser surgery of urinary obstruction from prostate pathology, robotic surgical therapy of prostate – bladder – kidney cancer, pathophysiology and induratio penis plastic therapy. Finally, Prof. Francesco Montorsi was particularly interested in the most modern guidelines in the field of diagnosis and therapy of erectile dysfunction. He is author of more than 1400 scientific articles (source PubMed ) published in the most prestigious indexed international scientific journals. Currently, with an H-index higher than 130 (the main index that evaluates the quality and importance of scientific research – source Google Scholar ) it is considered one of the best surgeons – researchers in the world.   

Prof. Montorsi is part of the 2003 Group which brings together the main Italian researchers and is mentioned both in the Top Italian Scientists, clinical sciences where he emerges to be the Italian surgeon with the highest H-Index.    

Prof. Montorsi is also included in Clarivate Analytics ‘ list of Global Highly Cited Researchers which collects the most cited international scientific researchers.  

Publishing activity: European Urology

European Urology of which Prof. Montorsi was Editor-in-Chief (Director in charge) from 2006 to 2013, is the official journal of the European Association of Urology (EAU), the most important international scientific society in the sector with over 20000 members of urologist specialists. Prof Montorsi currently holds the position of Editor-in-Chief Emeritus. Under the direction of Prof. Montorsi, European Urology has become the first international scientific journal of the Uro-andrological sector in terms of Impact Factor, the index that identifies the prestige of scientific journals. Since the appointment of Prof. Montorsi as Editor-in-Chief, there has been a progressive increase in the number of scientific manuscripts sent for publication, testifying to the progressive increase in the prestige of the magazine.

Best European Urologist Under 40

Among the numerous prizes received by Prof. Montorsi during his career, in March 1998 he received the Crystal Matula Award, the most prestigious prize of the European Association of Urology, awarded to a young surgeon – researcher under the age of 40 with the best international scientific production. The Crystal Matula Award was established in 1997 and to date has always been awarded during the annual congress of the European Association of Urology. All the winners of this prestigious award now hold first level academic positions in the urological field.

Excellence in Oncological Urology and Andrology: World Recognition

Prof Montorsi was appointed Commander of the Italian Republic by the President of the Republic Mr Sergio Mattarella in December 2016.

In 2018 for the first time the American Urological Association, one of the most prestigious international urological associations, awarded Prof Montorsi, a non-American citizen, the Hugh Hampton Young Award. Among the reasons for the award “the fundamental scientific contribution to the study of oncological urology and andrology and the leadership in global urological academic activity”.

In 2019 the European Association of Urology, the main European urological scientific society, awarded Prof Montorsi the prestigious “Frans Debruyne Lifetime Achievement Award” for the fundamental scientific and academic contribution made by Prof Montorsi to the development of international urological science and growth of the Association.

In the Elite of World Surgery

The Royal College of Surgeons of England, the official professional order that gathers all the surgeons of England, awarded in November 2017 its highest honor – the Honorary Fellowship – to Prof. Francesco Montorsi for his merits in the surgical field. There are only 150 honorary fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons worldwide.
